The IEA Global Energy Review 2025 is out, providing valuable insights into how the world’s energy landscape is evolving.
Here are some key highlights:
▸ Energy Demand Surges – Global energy demand grew by 2.2% in 2024, outpacing the average rate of the past decade. Electricity demand soared 4.3%, driven by record temperatures, electrification, and digitalization.
▸ Renewables & Nuclear Lead Growth – Renewables accounted for 38% of the increase in global energy supply, while nuclear power grew by 33%, adding 7 GW of new capacity—one of the highest levels in 30 years.
▸ Regional Shifts – Emerging economies fueled over 80% of global demand growth. China and India led the way, while the EU saw energy demand growth for the first time since 2017.
▸ Declining Oil Share – Global oil demand fell below 30% of total energy use for the first time ever, while natural gas saw the strongest growth among fossil fuels, with demand rising 2.7%.
▸ Electrification Boom – EV sales surpassed 17 million units, and electricity consumption hit a record high, with solar PV and wind generation seeing historic increases.
▸ Decoupling Emissions from Economic Growth – While the global economy expanded by 3%, CO₂ emissions grew by just 0.8%, highlighting the growing role of clean energy technologies in limiting emissions.
